Acrossing the border of Schengen
January 8-9, 2015 – Subotica
They take what they find to make fire inside the old factory of brick. All they can find on the ground : bin liners, clothes, the wood of the old house beside which seems to collapse slowly. Some of them take 5 or 6 weeks to come from Afganisthan, other take several months. Today they are only a few ten in the old factory, two days ago they were more than hundred. It depends on the cold and on the snow on the border with Bulgaria. If it has snowed, they stay generally blocked there during a few days but if the weather is more clement many arrive in Subotica before trying to cross the Schengen border to enter into the economic Europe. They arrive often by taxi from the city center of Subotica. They have already covered thousand of kilometers, mostly by foot and without maps, sometimes with the help of a GPS, but above all with an obvious instinct of survival.
Here, in Subotica, the serbian policemen steal their money, their mobilephone, their passeports (for those who weren‘t already stolen in Bulgaria or somewhere else). Sometimes the policemen ask them to take off their clothes and burn their jackets…why? Why this inhumanity? Of course, they don‘t make it during the day when helping people bring them food, clothes or others things to survive in this cold but they come every day, sometimes twice and usually at night.
What are these migrants looking for? The war bruise them in Afghanistan (mostly come from Afghanistan, Palestine and Syria) and they are also often mistreated on their way to others countries but all they are doing is asking for a better, an easier life. And we suggest them that in Europe a better life is possible, a life without war. And they have the courage to come here, even by foot, because in fact what are they risking? Nothing worse than what they knew at their home…
Mourad tells me that it isn’t so cold today (it’s minus 1° or 2°), moreover they stand outside with others.

Destination Checkpoints On Tour started on October 18th.
After leaving Geneva, I drove to Brussels where I spent a week getting into the European mode. It was also the right opportunity to tweak my video display system in the bus ambulance, for finding electric power sources in public places was not always that easy and was very time-consuming. Considering that I would be showing my video installation in numerous unexpected public places, I had to find a more efficient solution, so I had a second battery installed, together with a circuit breaker, and have been since then fully autonomous.
Since the beginning I had the great pleasure to live at various friend’s. After Brussels I went to Oudenaarde then I spent some days in Calais to meet some of the numerous undesired people of Europe. To take photographs, always, to do what I know how to do, and to photograph within this context: it necessarily calls into question the notion of universal right, going back to one’s origins, asking “why them and not me”?
What is the border? The question is one of my leitmotivs, anther one is « do you feel safe? » Those who cannot cross the border will stay at the margins of history. « When there is nothing more, there are still stories » (Salman Rushdie), it is thus a question of continuing telling them. I continued to London where I recorded the first radical reaction: on the second evening, I installed the ambulance in Soho, then left to eat, meanwhile somebody (impeccably) scotch-taped cardboards on the windows through which I display videos.
After London, I stopped again in Calais for one night, then I drove to Antwerp where I installed the ambulance in front of the university. That had quite an impact. I was able to present my project to the local police, with one of the policemen wearing a bulletproof jacket. I obviously showed the backstage of my installation and was able to answer all the questions, stating that I had nothing to hide, rather a lot show, like my videos! The next day, Amsterdam was quieter. My main concern was not falling into canals while parking. Then I continued to Hamburg. One of the first things to notice in Germany is how large the public spaces are. To position my ambulance in the middle of the sidewalk of a main road in the centre did not seem to raise a security problem. I was able to stay there more than three hours before the police came and asked me if I had an authorization.
Then sunday I arrived in Berlin, just in time for the birthday of the fall of the Wall. It felt like New Year’s Eve… way different from the emotions and feelings of 1989!
This week the ambulance will be in various places of Berlin every evening…

Destination Checkpoints On Tour a démarré le 18 octobre dernier.
En quittant Genève, j’ai rejoint Bruxelles pour une première semaine d’acclimatation européenne ou j’ai également pu réadapter mon système de diffusion vidéos dans mon bus ambulance car trouver de l’électricité dans des lieux publics n’était pas facile et surtout prenait du temps. En imaginant que j’allais montrer mon installation vidéo dans de nombreux espaces publics improvisés, il me fallait trouver une solution plus pratique. J’ai donc fait installer une deuxième batterie avec un coupe-circuit afin d’être complètement autonome.
Et l’aventure à commencé ! J’ai eu le grand plaisir de loger chez différents amis. De Bruxelles je suis allée à Oudenaarde, puis j’ai passé quelques jours à Calais pour rencontrer quelque uns des si nombreux indésirés de l’Europe. Prendre des images, toujours, faire ce que je sais faire, et prendre des images dans ce contexte c’est forcément interroger le droit universel, retourner aux sources, pourquoi eux et pas moi ?
Qu’est-ce que la frontière ? C’est l’une de mes question ritournelle en plus de « vous sentez-vous en sécurité ? » ou « qu’est-ce que la sécurité ? ». Qui ne peut passer la frontière restera dans la marge de l’histoire, « Quand il n’y a plus rien, subsistent encore les histoires » (Salman Rushdie), il s’agit donc de continuer de raconter. J’ai poursuivi sur Londres où j’ai eu droit à la première réaction radicale. Le deuxième soir, j’ai installé l’ambulance dans Soho, puis suis partie manger. Quelqu’un a scotché (impeccablement) les vitres où je diffuse les vidéos avec des cartons.
Après Londres, je me suis arrêtée à nouveau à Calais pour une nuit, puis après Téteghem, j’ai roulé jusqu’à Anvers où j’ai installé l’ambulance devant l’université. Et là, j’ai fait un effet certain. J’ai pu présenter mon projet aux forces de l’ordre locales dont un des policiers était venu en gilet pare-balle. J’ai évidemment montré les coulisses de mon installation et pu répondre à toutes les questions auxquelles j’ai rajouté que je n’avais rien à cacher, bien au contraire, surtout des vidéos à montrer ! Moins d’une heure plus tard, la télé (la locale et la régionale) est venue pour une interview que voici :

Le lendemain, Amsterdam était plus calme. Il s’agissait de ne pas tomber dans les canaux en me parquant. Puis j’ai poursuivi avec Hambourg. Ce qui d’emblée est appréciable en Allemagne, c’est l’étendue des espaces publics. Poser mon ambulance au milieu du trottoir d’une grande artère dans le centre n’a pas semblé poser de problème. J’ai pu y rester plus de trois heures avant que la police ne vienne me demander si j’avais une autorisation.
Et je suis arrivée hier à Berlin, journée anniversaire de la chute du mur. J’avais comme une impression de Nouvel an…plus rien à voir avec les émotions de 1989!
Cette semaine l’ambulance sera en différents lieux de Berlin dès la tombée de la nuit…

Destination Checkpoints was an invitation to an unusual journey to the West Bank. With the same intentions, the travelling project that I have designed for Destination Checkpoints On Tour will embark aboard a van disguised as an ambulance. Following in the footsteps of part 1, I wish to provide an aesthetic experience of public security, through the images, sounds and rhythms that render the notion itself evident, figurable, and therefore plastic. This setup allows my project to take on a more interactive scope.
Like for my previous projects, I will persist in my field of expertise: the sensitive observation of wielded power, of image control mechanisms, and in this case the intimate relationship between the tourism and security industries in Israel/Palestine. With the same approach, I’ve began designing a new project focusing on India and non-violence.
Destination Checkpoints On Tour will be heading out in spring 2014. As a mobile installation it will travel through Europe and the Middle-East. Its declared intention is to go and meet spectators and to invite them to reflect on the way the security and surveillance measures set up at the heart of their everyday lives actually impact behaviours in society.
Destination Checkpoints (1st part)
Retrospective and Assessment
The first part of the Destination Checkpoints video-photo installations took part in the city of Geneva, over a period between May 23 and August 31 2013. Destination Checkpoints (part 1) offered an artistic approach to the theme of security and tourism.
CHOICE OF THE TERRAIN: an Organised System for Seeing and Perceiving.
We know that Israel boasts beautiful weather, fabulous beaches, modern cities, and valuable historical sites. Tourism is indeed one of the most dynamic sectors of Israel’s economy. However, the pretty picture painted to the tourists is intimately linked to another dynamic, and financially stronger, economic sector: security. The role of Israel’s security industry is to efficiently contain the scope of touristic discourse. Start-ups specialising in designing electronic surveillance methods, construction companies, architects, and engineers are recruited to build walls, watchtowers, and set up passage points equipped with sophisticated detection technology. Therefore, any traveller straying from the recommended path and heading to the West Bank is confronted with the obvious and underlying aspects of the system. Huge installations of which the most obvious are the West bank barrier and the checkpoints literally stick-out, reshaping the landscaping and giving it a whole new meaning.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Aesthetics, Power, Control
Destination Checkpoints, was an invitation on an unusual journey to the West Bank, a place transformed by the West Bank barrier, the colonies, and the many checkpoints which, as a part of everyday life for the Palestinians, limit their horizons.
The project took form during the several trips I made to the West Bank. These trips led me to deeply explore the idea of tourists wondering around in an ultra-secured context, and the travellers’ ability to position themselves based solely on an image portrayed by the authorities in order to appear welcoming. My challenge was to bring out an aesthetic feeling from experiencing the installations used for control and repression.
At what point does the power of representation turn into the representation of power, via codes of perception induced by visible media and the dynamics existing between those media? To what extent are aesthetic feelings drawn from the existence of power…fear, or security?

– Opening reception at café Gavroche, June 26 “L’esthétique sécuritaire/2 : Hébron : destination tendance” (Aesthetic Security/2: Hebron: a Trendy Destination) video (26min), video of a touristic visit under heavy surveillance which takes place every Saturday in the old part of Hebron.

Destination Checkpoints On Tour (2ème volet)
Destination Checkpoints était une invitation à un voyage inhabituel en Cisjordanie. En écho à cette intention, le projet itinérant que j’ai conçu pour Destination Checkpoints On Tour est embarqué à bord d’une camionnette, habillée aux couleurs d’une ambulance. Comme dans le volet précédent, je souhaite poursuivre l’expérience d’une lecture esthétique de la sécurité publique, à travers les images, les sons et les rythmes qui rendent cette notion manifeste, figurable et donc plastique. Grâce à cette installation, mon projet prend une dimension interactive plus marquée.
Comme dans mes projets précédents, je reste fidèle à mon terrain de prédilection, celui de l’observation sensible de l’exercice du pouvoir, et des mécanismes de contrôle de l’image, et, dans le cas présent, celui du lien intime qui unit les industries du tourisme et de la sécurité en Israël/Palestine.
Destination Checkpoints On Tour prend la route au printemps 2014. Il s’agit d’une installation mobile, qui va parcourir l’Europe et le Moyen-Orient. L’intention déclarée est d’aller à la rencontre des spectateurs et les inviter à s’interroger sur la manière dont les dispositifs de surveillance et de sécurité installés au cœur de leur vie quotidienne influent sur les comportements en société.
L’installation Destination Checkpoints On Tour embarque un choix fourni d’images et de vidéos. Rétrospective et bilan
Le premier volet des installations vidéos-photos Destination Checkpoints s’est déroulé progressivement, sur le territoire de la Ville de Genève, du 23 mai au 31 août 2013. Destination Checkpoints (1er volet) a proposé une réflexion artistique sur le thème de la sécurité et du tourisme.
CHOIX DU TERRAIN : un système organisé du regard et de la perception
On sait qu’Israël vante la douceur de son climat et de ses plages, la modernité de ses villes et la valeur de certains sites historiques. Le tourisme est de fait l’un des secteurs les plus dynamiques de l’économie israélienne. Pourtant, l’image positive vantée aux touristes est intimement liée au dynamisme d’un autre secteur économique, financièrement plus important, celui de la sécurité. Le rôle de l’industrie israélienne de la sécurité est de circonscrire de manière étanche le territoire du discours touristique. Des start-up spécialisées dans le développement de moyens de surveillance électroniques, des entreprises de construction, des architectes, des ingénieurs sont mis à contribution pour poser des murs, construire des points de passages et des miradors, en les assortissant de technologies de détection sophistiquées. Ainsi le voyageur qui se détourne du circuit recommandé pour se rendre en Cisjordanie est confronté à l’endroit et à l’envers de ce système. Son parcours est jalonné d’éléments monumentaux, dont les plus visibles sont le Mur de séparation et les checkpoints, qui s’imposent littéralement dans le paysage, le re-dessinent et le re-signifient.
DESCRIPTION DU PROJET : l’esthétique, le pouvoir, le contrôle
Destination Checkpoints, était une invitation à un voyage inhabituel en Cisjordanie, redessiné par le tracé du Mur de séparation, les colonies et les nombreux checkpoints qui rythment le quotidien des Palestiniens et limitent leur horizon. Le projet s’est construit sur plusieurs voyages que j’ai effectués sur le terrain. Ils m’ont permis de mûrir une réflexion sur la déambulation touristique dans un contexte ultra-sécuritaire, et sur la capacité du voyageur à se positionner face aux images que le pouvoir met en valeur pour se montrer accueillant. Je prenais le paris de provoquer une sensation esthétique à partir de l’expérience des outils du contrôle et de la répression. A partir de quel moment le pouvoir de représentation devient la représentation du pouvoir et produit des codes de perceptions induits par les supports visibles et par la dynamique entre les supports ? Dans quelle mesure les sensations esthétiques participent de l’existence du pouvoir… peur ou sécurité ?

– Bibliothèque de la Cité du 23 mai au 31 août 2013 (vernissage le 23 mai) : vidéos « Propos sur le vif » (110min), entretiens avec des personnes vivant ou travaillant à proximité des dispositifs de contrôles.
–Ambulance itinérante du 23 mai au 31 juillet 2013, elle a circulé dans différents espaces publics à Genève : vidéos « Destination Checkpoints » (90min), passages de checkpoints et points de contrôle en temps réel.
–Centre de la photographie Genève, 50 JPG du 5 juin au 28 juillet (vernissage le 5 juin) : vidéo « l’Esthétique sécuritaire/1 : un entraînement pour touristes» (8min), scène singulière du dispositif sécuritaire israélien.
-Vernissage au café Gavroche le 26 juin « L’esthétique sécuritaire/2 : Hébron : destination tendance » (26min), vidéo d’une visite touristique sous haute sécurité qui se fait tous les samedis dans la vieille-ville d’Hébron.
–Affiches d’art public, sur les colonnes Morris de la Ville de Genève, du 25 juillet au 15 août. –Cartes postales : « souvenirs », dans divers lieux publics.
